WW2 ARP/CD Contaminated Persons Personal Effects Tins

These tins came from the Manchester many years ago and I thought we had sold them all. but I found a few while having a sort out.

The tins were known as miners 'snap' tins and were used to transport the miners lunch or dinner down the mine. They were an ideal container for the ARP services to use at first aid and decontamination centres to use for the personal effects of gas contaminated persons. The boxes are stamped either 'Made in England' or 'ACME' (yes, beware coyotes carrying anvils, rockets, large rocks etc). They contain a three part carbon copy form and numbered labels. Each tin was numbered inside and out to match the labels. The idea was that labels would be pinned on clothing as it was sent for laundering and the box would hold watches, rings, wallets etc. one copy of the form would stay with the box, one would go with the person and one copy would be held on file (presumably).

The tins were not stored well before we obtained them 20+ years ago and have lost most of their tinning and external numbers and have some light pitting in places. However they are still a superb reminder of a dark time when Britain really believed it would have to face large scale deployment of poison gases.
