WW2 National Flour Bag

A scarce Grocers National Flour Bag. Before the advent of the self service concept of shopping as seen in our modern impersonal supermarkets, all products were sold across the counter by small outlets (and yes that included the early Sainsbury's!) which were either part of a chain such as 'International' Stores or local independants. Sugar, flour, meat whatever was weighed out and bagged to the customers requirements, within the limitations of rationing of course!

National Flour was a product of rationing, not particularly good quality, said to be difficult to bake with, it produced poor quality bread which left a lot to be desired against the pre-war loaf.

These particular bags are printed as National Flour and have the name of Henry Foster, a 'Central Restaraunt and Cafe and Bakery' of West Street, Leominster.
